Zoho Marketing Automation Journey for Simple Lead Nurture
If your lead nurture plan is “I’ll remember to follow up”… no you won’t.
The fix is not more discipline. The fix is a simple automated journey that follows up for you, consistently, every time a lead comes in.
In this post, we’re building a basic lead nurture journey in Zoho Marketing Automation using the drag-and-drop Journey Builder. It’s the smallest setup that still creates real results.

Quick note on free plans
Zoho Marketing Automation is usually a free trial, not free-forever. If you need a true $0 option, Zoho Campaigns has a forever-free plan, and you can still do basic drip-style follow-ups there.
But if you want real journey logic, goals, scoring, and branching, Marketing Automation is where the good stuff lives.
What we are building
A simple journey that:
- Triggers when someone becomes a new lead
- Sends a welcome email
- Waits 2 days
- Branches based on engagement
- Tags or scores leads so you can segment them later
- Exits them automatically when they convert, like booking a call
- Optionally hands off hot leads to sales
Start with 3 emails: Welcome, Value, CTA. That’s it.
Step 1: Prep your entry point
Journeys need a clean entry trigger. The easiest one is a list.
Create a list for new leads
Go to your Contacts or Leads area and create a list like:
New Leads – Website
This becomes the bucket every new website lead lands in.
Confirm your capture method
You need something feeding leads into that list, such as:
- Signup form
- Pop-up
- Integration from your site or CRM
Marketing Automation supports forms and pop-ups, and many teams also feed leads in through integrations.
If leads are not reliably entering your list, your journey will look “broken” even if it is set up perfectly.
Step 2: Build the journey in Journey Builder
- Open Customer Journeys or Journey Builder
- Click Create Journey
- Choose your trigger: Added to List
- Select your list: New Leads – Website
- “Here’s the guide”
- “Here’s your next step”
- “Here’s the resource you requested”
Now build the flow.
Add Email #1: Welcome or next step
Your first email should deliver what they expected and set the tone.
Example goal:
- If opened or clicked
Add a Wait step
Add a Wait: 2 days
Two days is long enough to avoid feeling spammy, short enough to keep momentum.
Add an If/Else based on engagement
Add an If/Else condition like:
- Send Email #2: Quick win plus link
- Add a tag like Engaged
- Optionally bump lead score
If opened or clicked
- Send a resend-lite version with a different subject line
- Keep the body similar, just give them another chance to notice it
- Tag them something like Unengaged if you want to segment later
If not opened
- Engaged
- Needs Nurture
- Ready for Sales
This is where journeys beat basic drip campaigns. You are reacting to behavior instead of blasting everyone the same way.
Add tags or scoring actions
Use tags and scoring so you can build smarter audiences later.
Simple tagging examples:
- Add points for clicking your main CTA link
Simple scoring example:
You are not doing this for fun. You are doing it so you can filter your list later and send the right message to the right people.
Add a Goal so they can exit when they convert
Add a goal like:
Booked a call
That way, once they convert, they exit the journey automatically and stop receiving nurture emails that no longer fit.
Step 3: Turn on the sales handoff (optional but powerful)
If someone clicks your “Book a call” link, you can trigger handoff actions like:
- Create a task for sales
- Notify a salesperson
- Update a field or stage
- Push them to the next step in your process
This depends on your setup and what other Zoho apps you are using, but the concept is the same.
Engagement should create action, automatically.
A simple 3-email nurture sequence you can start with
Email 1: Welcome
- Deliver the resource
- Set expectations
- One clear link
Email 2: Value
- One quick win they can apply today
- Link to a relevant guide or video
Email 3: CTA
- Ask them to take the next step
- Book a call, reply with a question, or pick an option
If you want to get fancy later, you can add segmentation by interest, industry, or service type. But this basic setup is already enough to stop leads from slipping through cracks.
Wrap-up
Your CRM follow-up should not depend on memory.
A basic journey with a list trigger, 3 emails, and one If/Else split will outperform “I’ll follow up later” almost every time.
If you want, I can also write the three emails in your exact TechnoMap voice and map the journey steps to your Zoho CRM handoff rules.
